Fortnite returns to Google Play worldwide
After nearly six years away, Fortnite is coming back to the Google Play Store for Android users on March 19. The game’s return ends the need for sideloading or using Epic’s alternative installer for anyone who wants to play on their phone.
This move follows a long legal battle that reshaped how developers and app stores interact. Starting tomorrow you can open the Play Store, search for “Fortnite,” and install it like any other app.
The end of widespread sideloading on Android
Epic Games and Google parted ways in 2020 after Epic tried to sidestep Google’s 30 percent fee on in-app purchases. Google removed Fortnite from the Play Store, forcing mobile players to download the installer directly from Epic’s website or use Epic’s own app to get the game.
While Android has long supported installing apps from outside the store, many users found the process intimidating or cumbersome. With Fortnite back on the Play Store, updates will be handled automatically through the system, so players will have the latest version without manual installs.
An agreement that changed the market
The global return was made possible by a deal reached at the end of 2025 after years of litigation. Google agreed to key concessions, including lowering its cut in certain cases from 30 percent to 20 percent and making it easier for third-party stores to operate within the Android ecosystem.
Fortnite had already returned in a limited way to the United States last December, but this worldwide rollout completes the return. Players everywhere will have access to the full experience, including Battle Royale, Lego Fortnite, Festival mode, Fortnite OG, and community creations that expanded the game beyond a typical shooter.
The downside: fewer V-Bucks for your money
Not everything about the relaunch is celebratory. Coinciding with the Play Store relaunch and the start of Chapter 7, Season 2, Epic is changing its in-game currency pricing in a way that reduces player purchasing power.
Until now, a standard package at a given price returned 1,000 V-Bucks. Starting March 19, that same price will only grant 800 V-Bucks. Epic cites inflation and market adjustments for the change, but players who regularly buy V-Bucks will feel the impact.
Why timing matters
Linking the Play Store return with the new season guarantees a large influx of returning and new players who may have left because of installation hurdles. It’s a fresh start for many and an opportunity for Google to reclaim revenue it lost over the past six years.
If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to drop from the Battle Bus again, that moment is March 19. No more toggling unknown sources in settings — just visit the official store, make sure you have sufficient storage, and jump into the new season.
